General information about Valencia


Valencia is a medium-sized port city and Spain’s third largest city. It is the capital of the autonomous community Valencia as well as of the province Valencia. As one of the biggest cities it is also one of the liveliest. Valencia is situated on the Mediterranean Sea and is the industrial area on the Costa del Azahar.

The city of Valencia has a population of 900,000 inhabitants on an area of 134.65 sq km that is a density of population of 1183 inhabitants per sq km. The urban area of Valencia has a population of about 1.2 million inhabitants and the population of the metropolitan area (urban area plus satellite towns) is about 1.5 million inhabitants.

As Valencia is located directly at the Mediterranean Sea at an altitude of 15 m above the sea level and with a lot of beaches surrounding the city, also the climate is characterised by the Mediterranean Sea. The annual average temperature is 17.8°C, alternating from 11.5°C in January and 25.5°C in August. During the winter months, the temperatures do hardly never fall below 4°C - 8°C and during the day it is possible that the temperatures rise to 18°C - 25°C. In summer it can be very hot with temperatures between 35°C and 40°C. The summer nights in Valencia are very pleasant as temperatures range from 20°C to 25°C.

In Valencia it does not rain very much. Primarily it is raining in spring and autumn, approximately 5 days each month. In the first weak of September it rains often very heavy. During the summer, in June, July and August it does almost never rain.

The best climate to visit Valencia is between April and June and from the middle of September to the end of October but for Central European people, the mild climate during the winter months is also quite pleasant.

If you want to enjoy swimming in the Mediterranean Sea you should notice, that the average Water temperature in Valencia from June to October lies above 20°C. In August the water reaches his maximum temperature of 25°C. During the winter months the Mediterranean Sea has a temperature of 13°C - 15°C.
